Happy birthday!

Funny Sayings from Kids: I gave a reminder of how to do something, and one student replied, “I know; I n-o know!”

“Mr. Smith, you are spoiled.” (because I got a new pencil)

We have  had electricians working on our school alarm system this week.  When some roof tiles were lifted up, one child asked one of them “Why are you breaking the school?”

Once every week I let the whole class stay in during recess.  During our inside recess, the electrician mentioned above was working in our room.  One student began playing, “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” with him by quizzing him as he worked.  The hard questions were anything involving 100.  It was pretty entertaining.

We did an experiment this week where we soaked an egg in vinegar.  The vinegar eats off the egg shell, and it turns out pretty cool.  After this, the students asked if we could try bouncing it because it kind of felt like a bouncy ball.  I thought this would be a good learning experiment for them, so I went to a drawer to get out a posterboard to bounce it on so that it wouldn’t make much mess.  When I bent down, the egg caught on the corner of the drawer and cracked into the drawer.  Students thought that was pretty hilarious.  Good thing it was time for recess so I could send them out and get it cleaned up!

Academics: This week in math we learned how to measure to the nearest inch.  We did writing centers again this week, and I think it is really helping them each learn the basics at the level their level.   Our reading and spelling focus was ending blends again (two consonants at the end of a word).  In social studies, we talked about the President’s and the American Sign Language alphabet.  We also learned to say a few words in Spanish.  This week for science, we did two fun experiments.  First, we experimented with solving the problem of how to erase permanent marker when I “accidentally” wrote on the board in permanent marker.  Secondly, we soaked an egg in vinegar to observe the results.  The vinegar eats the shell away, and it ends up very cool!
