Week 20

We had another great week!

Our "clarifying glasses" to look closely if we don't understand the meaning of what we read

This week during clean up time, I've allowed the students to arrange our carpets in various shapes, such as letters

Funny Sayings from Kids: Students learned the words “absent” and “present” this week when the secretary used the intercom to ask me a question about our roll.  When she heard the secretary say she was accidentally marked absent, one very confused student said, “I don’t have asthma!”  I explained what absent meant, and then I said that I will mark her present.  She then said, “Wow, I’m the president!”

We reviewed doubles math facts this week, and for fun students started calling them “bubbles” facts.
One student shared  with the class that her grandma used to work for the school, although she had her dates a little confused when she said, “Back in the eighty nineties. . .”

“Oh, I’ve seen Lincoln before.  His face is carved in the Mountain Rushmont.” (meaning Mount Rushmore)

“Can I use some hanitizer?” (meaning hand sanitizer)

Special Activities: This week we had a fun assembly with the Drum Brothers Ensemble.  They played African music and other percussion music for the school.  Also, we had a lot of indoor recess with the cold temperatures this week.

Academics: This week in math we practiced a lot on adding a special type of math fact called “doubles plus one.”  For example, 3+3=6 is a double, so 3+4=7 is a double plus one.  Hopefully this strategy will help students in learning to do addition quickly.  In writing this week we practiced using how in sentences.  How words are adverbs like quickly, quietly, slowly, etc. Our reading and spelling focus was two syllable words.  In social studies, we learned about American Sign Language and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.   In science, we did some fun experiments, including pulling a table cloth out from under a set table to see that if it’s done right, gravity will hold the dishes in place.

  1. Hi Mr. S! This is CR's mom from last year. I just wanted to explain why there was a lot of activity on your blog today. I was compiling all of the posts for his scrapbook. I still look in time to time to see how my nephew is doing in your class! Thanks! :)
