Funny Sayings from Kids: While looking at my staple
remover, one student commented, “I think those are metal snake teeth.”
I heard this
interesting interchange between students, which is especially memorable since
our football just won the state championship.
“I like BYU.” “Well, I like the Eagles!”
My birthday was
this week. The class got quite a kick
out of it being the teachers birthday.
Right away students asked how old I was.
I teased and led them on, but eventually I told them my age. Immediately everyone began telling me their
parents’ ages! (Luckily for parents, I
know that many of the students have no clue how old their parents are, so they
just made up numbers off the top of their head.)
Special Activities: This week was my birthday,
as mentioned above. Also, there was a
special activity regarding bus safety.
Students practiced bus rules and bus evacuation. There was a giant remote control bus there as
well that could talk. Students were also
given z-pass cards, which they have to zap to get on and off the bus. These cards make a log of students getting on
and off the bus to help ensure student safety. (For example, if a kindergartner accidentally
got on the wrong bus, he/she could be tracked down easily.)
Academics: This week in we learned how to subtract zero, tell
time to the hour, and count by 2’s. In writing this week we learned subject
verb agreement (“He runs.” instead of “He run.”) Our reading and spelling focus
was sh and th words. In social studies, we
learned about voting, along with the results of local, state, and national
elections. We also learned about
soldiers for Veterans Day. We also
introduced the background behind Thanksgiving, and we’ll talk about it more
next week. In science, we did an
experiment and writing about freezing things.
Students each got to choose something to freeze in one square of an ice
cube tray. Students were very surprised to
find that hand sanitizer does not freeze.
I made them think of ways this might be useful if you were an inventor
(soft and pliable ice packs, for example).
