We had a great post-Halloween week!

Funny Sayings from Kids: “It’s been a long time since I turned seven.”  (It had only been four days.)

This week some kids were reading a “joke book.”  Upon further inspection, I discovered it was a book about all kinds of fun facts with illustrations.  Since it was too hard of a book for them to read,
they made up jokes to go along with the illustrations and called it a joke book.

Special Activities: This week there really weren’t any special activities, other than wonderful parent volunteers visiting us.  We were just winding down from Halloween last week.  We tried to make our time constructive, even with one third of the class absent on two of the days this week.  One special activity was writing and performing subtraction plays for a math lesson.  Students really enjoyed this.

Academics: This week in math practiced counting by tens, counting dimes, and subtracting ones.  Writing this week was focused on writing and editing thank you letters to parents for parent teacher conference.  We are still reinforcing using complete sentences, as it is a struggle for many students. Our reading and spelling focus was ch and wh words.  In social studies, we learned about voting, along with the results of local, state, and national elections.  We also learned about soldiers in preparation for Veterans Day.  In science, we watched Magic School Bus, and we did an experiment about gravity.  Students were surprised to find that a light (but wadded up) piece of paper and a heavy basketball hit the ground at the same time because gravity pulls equally on everything.
