This was another great week!
Special Activities: This week there were no special activities other
than having Monday off for spring break and going swimming for P.E. Students have been loving the chance to go
swimming for P.E.
Funny Stuff From Kids: “I
went fishing with my family over spring break, so it felt like Father’s Day.”
A boy came in one morning wearing flip-flops on his
feet. I heard a girl tell him something
like this: “Nice flip-flops…I mean sandals…because on boys they’re called
sandals but on girls they’re called flip-flops!”
“I think I’m going to retire from being a student.”
We were watching a video about dolphins, and one
student asked, “Are there sharks in there?”
Another student replied, “No.
There are only dolphins-just like Bear Lake!”. . .I visit Bear Lake a
lot, and I sure wish there were dolphins there!
One student always brings home lunch, I found a
handful of moldy containers in his desk.
He simply replied, “I don’t care.
My mom has billions of ‘em.”
At our Easter party, one of the games was pushing a
plastic egg with your nose from one line to another. Afterward, a student with a good conscience
came to me and said, “I cheated by using my eye instead of my nose.’
One student innocently came up to me after lunch
and breathed on my face, saying “Smell my breath. Is it spicy?’
Homework: Now that the weeks of
spring break are over, I will be sending homework packets again.
Social Studies: We spent
time discussing how our “class court” we’ve been doing operates similar to real
life. We discussed what policeman,
judges, and jury members do in real life.
We also discussed freedom, and why we should
respect our country’s flag. We talked
about the sacrifices made for our country, along with how we reflect our feelings about those
sacrifices by our attitude during the pledge of allegiance.
Math: This week we reviewed how to add
three numbers together. We also talked
about rounding to the tens place (i.e. 47 would be rounded to 50). Students enjoyed the concept of
rounding. Right now they get it, but
they’ll probably need some practice and review.
Project Read/Spelling: This week
we focused we practiced bossy r words again.
I think the class has mastered this fairly well now.
Speedy Words and Rocket Math: Students
are learning their math facts very well!
AR: Students keep progressing!
Writing: This week for writing we wrote
about things that happened over spring break.
We had an author’s chair where students got to sit in the special chair
to share with the class their writing about Easter and spring break.
Science: For science this week I
brought in some slime that the Easter Bunny gave me. Students made hypotheses about what we could
mix together to make slime. We made
something similar to the slime by mixing borax (a type of detergent), glue,
water, and food coloring.
We also talked about life cycles, and I introduced
some class caterpillars that we get to watch turn into butterflies.
