We had a fun week!

Funny Sayings from Kids: During our talent show, one girl performed a funny love song that she sang to a boy in the class with actions.  (The boy happened to be her second cousin.)  Afterward another student said, “They couldn’t get married or else their kids would look weird.”

One student told the class about how she herded cows over the weekend.  Another student was quite confused at why she “hurted” cows.

I was trying to excite students about reading over the summer break.  I told them they could read fun books about dragons and princesses and wizards…or they could read interesting books about snakes or sharks or how toys are made.  Soon students started blurting out their two cents “a Harry Potter book”…”a book about how caterpillars become butterflies”…”a Star Wars book”…"a book about how babies are made.”  Needless to say, it’s a good thing we’re in first grade where I was the only one who knew that the last book idea would not be a good choice for a 7 year olds’ summer reading!

“You know, parents are great.  I bet Mr. and Mrs. Smith can tell when Charlie is crying—even when the thermometer (meaning baby monitor) is turned off.”

One day while working, students started visiting about grandparents’ ages.  One said, “My great-grandma is 99.”  Another one automatically made this assumption. “Oh, I’m sorry that she died.”  Apparently you die once reach 99.

Students had quite a time with the name “Barry” when a student was talking about a family member named Barry.  As one student said, “The only berry I knew about was the type of berry that comes off of a bush.”

Special Activities:  We had a class party this week that the students earned.  We had a brief talent show followed by a Wii party where we took turns racing in the “Mario cart” game and dancing in the “Just Dance” game.  We also made a nice Mother's Day craft.

Academics: This week in math we reviewed place value.  In writing, we have been discussing publishing.   Our reading and spelling focus was ending –tch vs. –ch words.  In social studies, we learned about being kind to others, even if they’re different than you.  This week for science, we practiced and prepared for our “science magic show” that we will perform in May.  We also learned about salamanders, since a student brought one to class this week.
