Funny Sayings from Kids: “That’s illegal” (They said it meaning that it was okay do that, and it wasn’t against the rules.)

A kindergarten girl at recess said,  “[So-and-so] is in your class, and I’m his brother.”

I got new glasses this week.  The students all were so supportive and thought I looked so cool!. . .even to the point that a handful of my students now really wish they could get glasses too.  One even said, “Maybe I’ll ask Santa for some.”

Special Activities: This week we had Christmas Around the World.  Once a week this month our class will visit another first grade teacher to learn about Christmas in another country.  Students loved visiting Mrs. Toomer’s class to learn about Christmas in Mexico this week.

We also had a great art project that my wife came in to teach the kids about where students made Christmas tree ornaments.

In addition, excellent parent volunteers helped with art, reading, math, and singing this week!!!

Academics: This week in math we focused a lot around adding by 2’s.  We practiced adding two to both even and odd numbers, including two digit numbers. In writing this week we practiced adding where into sentences.  (They don’t just write “He runs.”  They write “He runs by the pond.” To practice this, we hid a stuffed animal moose.  They found Martin the Moose each day and wrote a sentence about where he was hiding.  Our reading and spelling focus was r blends (words with r as the second sound, like trash).  In social studies, we did Christmas around the world, as explained above. In science, we learned about what a science fair is so that students can begin to think, prepare, and get excited about the upcoming Urie Elementary science fair.
