Funny Sayings from Kids: “School is heavenly.”
“I lost my birthmark!” (meaning bookmark)
Somehow I think this student has a skewed perspective: “You’re the only nice teacher in the whole world.”
“My grandparents are really rich. They have one hundred dollars.”
Mr. Maxfield (the custodian) was our star of the week, and he showed a picture of a very old teepee ring from the Native Americans that he came across in the mountains. One student said, “Oh, I know what that is. It’s an alien ring.”
One student kept talking about “that smart guy-Frankenstein.” I finally figured out that he was talking about Einstein.
Can I have another bandage (meaning elastic rubber band).
Special Activities: The students have been trying to fill a jar with marbles for good behavior. They finished filling the jar this week, so we finished the week off with a party. We watched the Disney cartoon movie, Robin Hood. We also had popcorn, coloring pages, etc. during the movie. The kids had a great time.
Academics: This week in math we worked a lot on measuring (both weight and length). We worked with nonstandard units. (i.e. How many paperclips long is it? How many pennies heavy is it on a balance scale? etc.). Writing this week was focused on Halloween prompts, and continuing to make concrete the concept of a complete sentence. Students really enjoyed writing sentences about pictures of funny baby Halloween costumes. Our reading and spelling focus was ending –nk, such as bank. Students learned that e never goes with nk. If it sounds like an “eng” sound, it is actually “ing.” In social studies, we learned about elections, including a few of the candidates and issues. (Of course information was presented-not opinion.) In science, students enjoyed an experiment using hydrophic sand (sand that does not mix with water to make mud).
