Hi! It was another excellent week in first grade.

Funny Sayings from Kids: “When I put my hand on my heart for the pledge I can feel my heart ‘beep’.”
There is a teacher nicknamed “Mr. C.” This week I overheard a first grader respond to another first grader in this way: “Mr. C?? I thought his name was ‘Mr. Sneeze.’”
It’s fun to observe the relationship between kindergartners and first graders. Even though they’re only a year apart, I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard, “Awh, that little kindergartner is so cute.”
Special Activities: There was a special activity this week where the fourth graders did skits to remind the younger students how to behave at school. It was a really fun activity. We also had some special visitors, including parents who helped with reading centers, taught about bullying, and began a Christmas program for our class to perform this year.
Academics: This week in math we practiced a lot on the doubles math facts (2+2, 3+3, 4+4, etc.). We also learned the terms "heavier" and "lighter" using a scale. For writing, we continued focusing on capitalization and question marks. Students have enjoyed our Halloween writing prompts. Our reading and spelling focus was the short o sound (hop, tom, etc.). In social studies, began learning about community. We talked about how everyone has an imaginary bucket, and we can help them fill it with good feelings. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to do much science this week. We were able to watch a Magic School Bus Hallowen episode, though.
