Week 2

Hi!  We had another great week.

"We are friends in Mr. Smith's class."

The school's new snack program included raspberries this week and raspberry footprints spread over the room from a smushed raspberry on someone's shoe!  I took a picture and told the class that it's not pleasant now--and it'll take work for us to clean it up--but since it was an accident it will be a funny first grade memory after it gets cleaned up.

Goop science project...Day one: student hypothesis testing

Example of our science writing

Our class and Mrs. Toomer's class doing the final goop/silly putty project

Funny Sayings from Kids: “This banana is in a cocoon like a butterfly!”

“I love you mom.”  One student said this from across the room to her mom who had dropped something off.  It’s great to see how unashamed of loving their parents first graders are.

We have cardboard "cubicles" that I  have students use during tests to minimize cheating.  One student started referring to them as "dressing rooms."  So now each of my students have a "dressing room."

Special Activities: This week the school began a healthy snack program funded by a grant.  It seems to be going very well.  Also, we had a special science activity of making silly putty with borax, water, and glue.

Academics: This week in math we reviewed writing numbers, and we introduced graphs.  In writing, we talked about how a sentence frames our thoughts.  Therefore, a sentence must have certain things (a subject, a verb, a capital, and a period) to be complete.  In reading and spelling, we practiced short i words like big.  Students loved science this week.  We learned how to think like a scientist (scientific method).  To practice this, we tried making “goop” (silly putty).  The first day students tried experimenting their own way to make it.  The second day I told them how to make it turn out well, and we combined with Mrs. Toomer’s class to make it.
