We had another great week!
Special Guests: We had an art lesson and a “my feelings” lesson from parents this week. Students loved it, and they learn so much from doing those things.
Funny Stuff From Kids: We learned how to say hello in Tongan (malo). One student combined this with aloha and began to say “maloha.”
When making their lunch choices, an option was hamburgers. One girl asked, “Are they the nasty kind or the good kind?”
One girl was telling me about asking her mom for something at home. This is how she described her mom’s answer: “maybe. . .but I know she means no.”
We have been practicing cluster words, as explained below. Some of these start with scr. For a little while the kids began thinking that “scramble” meant “Scrabble.” They would use sentences like, “We played a game of scramble on the kitchen table.”
Homework: Great job keeping up on homework. Thanks!
Social Studies: We talked a lot about feelings. We talked about how we can control our feelings sometimes, even though we can’t always control what happens. We also talked about not hurting others’ feelings.
Math: For math this week we focused on adding three numbers together. The students are starting to understand it very well.
Project Read/Spelling: This week we focused on clusters (scr, str, and spr) words. This is the second week in a row that we’ve done clusters. A few still struggle with it, but most of the students have mastered it.
Speedy Words and Rocket Math: Students are progressing on their facts and instant words! An ice cream party is being planned for students who are progressing and working on passing off their rocket math. They have to pass off one rocket math each week to earn that part of the ice cream sundae. For example, students who passed a rocket math this week earn a scoop. Next week they’ll earn sprinkles, and the next week they’ll earn toppings.
AR: Students have really picked up on reading more AR books. Thanks!
Writing: This week we did another week of “Where’s Martin” for writing. Students have to find our stuffed animal moose and write a sentence about where he was. This is to help them expand their sentences by telling about where something is happening.
Science: For science this week we learned a little bit about planets, including why we have a leap day every four years. We also did an experiment with Playdough to help the students visualize how fossils are formed.
